Assassination of Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka in Nigeria
Overview
On October 26, 2026, Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka and his associate, Adamu Abubakar, were shot dead by gunmen in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State. The attack, which took place outside the cleric’s residence, was reportedly carried out by two armed men on a motorcycle.
The militant group Ansaru, a breakaway faction of Boko Haram, claimed responsibility for the killings via an audio message. Following the incident, President Bola Tinubu ordered security agencies to conduct an intensified investigation to apprehend the perpetrators.
The assassination has highlighted religious tensions in northern Nigeria. While Masussuka’s theological views had previously drawn criticism from rivals, religious leaders, including Sheikh Halliru Maraya, have stated that the killing violates both religious principles and the Nigerian Constitution.
