COP31 climate summit preparations

Overview

Ahead of the COP31 summit in Antalya, Türkiye, international organizations have issued calls for increased investment and concrete action to address the humanitarian impacts of climate change.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) urged world leaders to boost funding to combat extreme weather, such as floods and droughts, noting that nature-based solutions could significantly reduce hazard severity and prevent massive economic losses for developing nations.

In support of these efforts, religious and development organizations, including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Relief Services, have advocated for a shift from symbolic pledges to implementation. These groups are specifically calling for climate finance that prioritizes grants over loans to avoid increasing debt in poor nations, as well as the establishment of clear metrics for adaptation and a “just transition” mechanism for developing countries.
