Ayotzinapa case legal developments in Mexico

Former Guerrero Governor Ángel Aguirre Rivero was arrested by the Federal Prosecutor's Office in connection with the 2014 disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students. He faces charges of forced disappearance and obstruction of justice, specifically for allegedly ordering the destruction of security camera footage from the Iguala Palace of Justice that could have aided the investigation.

Following his detention and transfer to Altiplano federal prison, a judge ordered preventive detention for Aguirre Rivero. While the families of the disappeared students expressed that the arrest is a positive development, they continue to demand the release of military intelligence documents and the return of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI).
