5G expansion and trials in Spain and Argentina

In early July, Argentine Governor Carlos Sadir announced a multi‑year plan to extend 5G coverage and fiber optics across Jujuy province, aiming to improve education, health, tourism and public safety. At the same time, Spain’s Telefónica began mmWave 5G micro‑antenna pilots on street furniture in densely populated urban spots such as Oviedo, Valencia and the Movistar Arena in Madrid, testing a high‑capacity layer for crowded events.

By late July, Spanish operators were advancing beyond ground‑based deployments. Vodafone Spain equipped the University of Malaga with a 5G satellite testbed under the EU‑funded 6G‑EXPANSE project, enabling research on non‑terrestrial networks via high‑altitude platforms and a CubeSat. Parallelly, Telefónica announced a new Edge computing node for Murcia, slated for 2027, to bring processing closer to users and support AI, industrial automation and public‑service applications, aligning with the European IPCEI Edge initiative. The trajectory shows a shift from initial coverage expansion and urban trials to integrated satellite and edge‑computing experiments, while Argentina’s rollout proceeds independently of the later Spanish developments.
