Madhya Pradesh Moong Procurement Dispute

Entities: Madhya Pradesh · Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, India · Mohan Yadav · Edal Singh Kansana · Vishvas Sarang

Overview

In late July 2026, Madhya Pradesh’s agriculture minister met farmer representatives to raise concerns over the central government's moong procurement target. He wrote to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan asking for the summer‑moong procurement quota to be increased from the approved 4.54 lakh mt to 8.06 lakh mt for the 2026‑27 marketing year, arguing that a higher target would extend minimum support price benefits to the state's 3.47 lakh registered growers.

The following day, more than 2,000 farmers marched on Bhopal, broke police barricades and surrounded Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s residence, demanding that the state purchase the entire moong crop at the MSP and scrap the e‑token system for fertilizer distribution. The protest blocked the Bhopal‑Narmadapuram highway, forced traffic diversions and led to the closure of several schools. In response, the state formed a three‑member ministerial committee chaired by the chief minister and raised its procurement share from 25 % to 60 % as an interim step. Police reported no injuries, but a heavy police presence remains as negotiations continue.
