Aarhus municipal policy and development shifts

Aarhus Municipality is implementing several strategic shifts regarding climate goals, administrative leadership, and urban development.

Regarding climate policy, the municipality has moved its climate neutrality target from 2030 to 2035. Under a new political agreement, the city aims to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 85 percent by 2030, with a potential for 90 percent. The delay in the original goal is attributed to a lack of available carbon capture opportunities and necessary national frameworks. If carbon capture technology is successfully implemented, the 2035 target could be reached as early as 2033.

In terms of administration and urban planning, the Technical and Environmental Department has appointed new management heads to oversee Aarhus Properties and the City and Nature department, focusing on the green transition. To address a housing shortage, the municipality is prioritizing development in suburban areas such as Egå, Harlev, and Lisbjerg to provide diverse housing options and alleviate pressure on the city center.
