AbbVie immunology pipeline and strategic transition
Overview
AbbVie is undergoing a strategic transition to mitigate the impact of biosimilar competition on its blockbuster drug, Humira. Following a decline in Humira sales to $6.4 billion in 2025, the company has relied on the growth of its immunology therapies, Skyrizi and Rinvoq, which generated $17 billion in combined sales during the same period.
To further strengthen its immunology and inflammation pipeline, AbbVie completed a $10.9 billion acquisition of Apogee Therapeutics. This acquisition brings long-acting antibody programs into AbbVie’s portfolio, specifically targeting dermatologic and respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A primary asset from the deal is zumilokibart, a monoclonal antibody that showed significant skin clearance in Phase 2 trials and is designed for potentially less frequent dosing schedules.
