Abduction of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister

Overview

On September 21, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Minister Fazal Shakoor Khan was allegedly abducted near the Peshawar motorway toll plaza. According to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, masked gunmen shot at the minister’s vehicle tires to force it to a stop before taking him by force.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly condemned the incident, with officials noting that the failure of police and district administration to prevent such high-profile abductions might necessitate a reduction in police powers. The assembly also noted previous security incidents, including an attempt to kidnap former minister Shakeel Ahmed.

Following a petition filed by the minister’s brother, the Peshawar High Court has since ordered the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police chief to investigate the abduction and take immediate steps for the minister’s recovery. Reports indicate approximately 14 men were involved in the incident, though two of the minister’s companions were later released.
