Abel Ferreira and Brazilian football tensions

Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira has criticized Brazilian football transfer regulations, arguing that rules preventing players with 12 appearances for one club from playing for another in the same Campeonato Brasileiro season force clubs to prioritize foreign talent over local players.

Parallel to these regulatory criticisms, a social media dispute emerged between Palmeiras and Flamengo. Following a 2-0 victory over Independiente del Valle in the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals, Flamengo posted the word ‘Desfrutem’ (Enjoy) on X. This was a provocation directed at Ferreira, who had previously advised Palmeiras fans to ‘enjoy’ the club’s recent successes after a draw against Botafogo. Ferreira later apologized for those comments, stating he was agitated following an intense match.

Ferreira’s disciplinary issues escalated when the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva (STJD) increased his suspension from two to three matches in the Campeonato Brasileiro. The final, non-appealable ruling follows an incident during a match against Mirassol where Ferreira was filmed kicking a broadcast audio capture device.

Classified as unsportsmanlike behavior under article 258 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice, the suspension prevents Ferreira from leading the team from the sidelines during upcoming matches against São Paulo, Grêmio, and Bahia. Assistant coach João Martins is expected to manage the team during this period. Palmeiras has expressed dissatisfaction, labeling the increased penalty “disproportionate” and citing a lack of consistency in tribunal rulings. The suspension applies strictly to the Brazilian league; Ferreira remains available for other competitions, including the Copa Libertadores.
