Abu Simbel solar alignment and festivities

Overview

In preparation for the solar alignment at the Abu Simbel Temple, Aswan Governor Amr Lashin ordered authorities to ensure maximum readiness for the event where sunlight illuminates the face of King Ramesses II. Preparations included upgrading the 2.5 km road from the airport to the temple, enhancing cleanliness and lighting, and inspecting local hotels and restaurants to ensure service quality for expected visitors. As the event approached, the Aswan Governorate and the Ministry of Culture organized a series of cultural and artistic festivals to coincide with the phenomenon. These festivities included the ‘Army of the Sun’ operetta and various performances across venues such as Kom Ombo, Toshka, and Aswan University. The celebrations were scheduled to culminate on October 21 and 22 with major performances at the Abu Simbel tourist market and in front of the temple at dawn, synchronized with the solar alignment.

On October 22, hundreds of tourists and local residents gathered at dawn to witness the phenomenon at the Great Temple of Ramesses II. During the approximately 20-minute alignment, a beam of sunlight penetrates about 60 meters into the inner sanctuary, illuminating the statues of Ramesses II, Amun-Ra, and Ra-Horakhty, while the statue of Ptah remains in shadow. To mark the occasion, local performers in colorful attire danced to traditional music, including the tabla and mizmar. Officials noted the event’s significance for cultural tourism, reporting that approximately 7,000 foreign tourists participated in the festivities.
