Submissions for the Best International Feature category at the 99th Academy Awards are progressing toward the October 1 deadline. The Academy is scheduled to reveal a shortlist of 15 films on December 15, with official nominations following on January 21. New eligibility rules allow films that win top prizes at major festivals—including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, Busan, or Toronto—to enter the race without national committee backing. In Spain, the Spanish Academy of Cinema has finalized its three preselected films: ‘Los domingos’ by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, ‘El ser querido’ by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and ‘La bola negra’ by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo. Announced by Goya winner Miriam Garlo, the selection includes ‘La bola negra’, which holds momentum from a Best Director win at Cannes, Cannes and explores the unfinished works of Federico García Lorca. ‘El ser querido’, starring querido’ stars Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo. Luengo, while ‘Los domingos’ is noted for previously winning the Concha de Oro in San Sebastián. The final Spanish representative, which will succeed ‘Sirat’, will be determined by an Academy member vote and announced on September 16. In the Philippines, the Film Academy of the Philippines has previously shortlisted eight contenders, including ‘58th’ and ‘Sisa’, with a final official entry expected from the National Selection Committee on September 4.
