Accra transport fare enforcement campaign

Overview

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) initiated an enforcement campaign in the Central Business District to combat illegal transport fare hikes. Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey stated that arbitrary price increases by commercial drivers, including taxi and ride-hailing operators, exacerbate economic hardships for commuters. The AMA and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Police issued warnings that drivers violating official fare lists would face prosecution.

Following these warnings, the AMA conducted enforcement actions resulting in the arrest of six transport operators, including three drivers and three conductors. Violations included charging rates significantly above approved limits on specific routes, such as the Awoshie, Kasoa, and Madina routes. The suspects were handed over to the police for legal proceedings under the AMA (Operation of Commercial Vehicles) By-laws, 2017.
