Accra urban management and safety enforcement
Overview
In early October 2026, a massive industrial fire occurred in the Kofikrom area near Accra’s North Industrial Area. The blaze, which affected the Duraplast company site, prompted the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Ghana Armed Forces to demolish unauthorized structures in the settlement to create emergency access routes. While the Ghana National Fire Service confined the flames, local officials reported potential fatalities within the densely populated area.
By late October, the AMA and the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly expanded enforcement efforts through a joint operation to remove unauthorized structures and trading activities near the Achimota New Overhead Aayalolo bus stop. This initiative sought to reduce congestion and restore public space. Concurrently, concerns emerged regarding the safety of decaying outdoor advertising structures along major highways, such as the Tetteh Quarshie area, leading to calls for inspections to prevent collapse risks.
