Acri mayoral ordinance revocation

Overview

The administration of Acri issued an ordinance, signed by Mayor Pino Capalbo, that prohibited unaccompanied minors under the age of 14 from being in public spaces between 12:00 AM and 6:30 AM. The measure was revoked less than 24 hours after implementation following objections from the Prefecture of Cosenza.

The Prefecture identified issues regarding the “motivation and legitimacy” of the measure and requested that the municipal administration consult with the Provincial Committee for Order and Security before making similar decisions.

Local political groups, including Forza Italia Acri and Acri Rossa – Rifondazione Comunista, criticized the administration. Forza Italia Acri cited a lack of coordination with law enforcement, while Rifondazione Comunista raised concerns regarding the balance between public security and individual freedoms, noting this was the second instance of a mayoral act being annulled or rectified following a dispute over tree cutting regulations in February 2025.
