Political tensions in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) have centered on procurement reforms and government stability. The Canberra Liberals have called for an overhaul of ACT procurement processes, alleging that existing policies have “institutionalised” privileged access for unions. The party is seeking the abolition of several mechanisms, such as the Secure Local Jobs Code and the UnionsACT MoU, to prevent special interests from influencing tenders. Additionally, debates have emerged regarding the territory’s self-government and its financial management in light of significant debt.

Following these internal policy disputes, the political landscape shifted as the ACT Greens declined to enter a new confidence and supply agreement with the Labor Government. Greens Leader Jo Clay cited a lack of concrete commitments regarding rental protections, disability support, and climate action, criticizing the government for offering “vague promises.” While Chief Minister Andrew Barr expressed disappointment over the breakdown in negotiations, the Greens have opted to remain on the crossbench to negotiate on an issue-by-issue basis rather than attempting to form an alternative coalition.
