Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman is expected to take on an expanded role at Atlético Madrid following a strong pre-season performance. After joining the club in the winter window from Atalanta for €35 million, Lookman scored twice in a 4-1 pre-season victory over Getafe, maintaining a scoring rate of one goal every 153 minutes across 24 appearances. In preparation for his first full campaign under coach Diego Simeone, Lookman will switch from wearing number 22 to number 11, a change prompted by the departure of Antoine Griezmann to Orlando City. Lookman previously recorded nine goals and four assists during his initial half-season, which included scoring on his debut in a Copa del Rey match against Real Betis. As he prepares for the 2026/27 campaign, Lookman has transitioned from a mid-season arrival to an established squad member. His new number 11 jersey was previously worn by Thiago Almada. The 28-year-old has expressed respect for team captain Koke and noted the intense passion of the Atlético Madrid supporters, entering the new season in strong form after scoring during pre-season training.
