Ademola Lookman role at Atletico Madrid

Overview

Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman is entering his first full campaign with Atlético Madrid following a €35 million winter transfer from Atalanta. Having transitioned from a mid-season arrival to an established squad member, the 28-year-old has switched his jersey number from 22 to 11, a change prompted by Antoine Griezmann’s departure to Orlando City.

Lookman’s impact during his initial six months included nine goals and four assists across 24 appearances. His recent form earned him recognition from ESPN, which ranked him as the 13th-best wide forward in the world. During a 2-2 draw against Villarreal, Atlético Madrid had to contend with playing with ten men after defender Robin Le Normand received a straight red card. Lookman had a quiet performance during the fixture and was substituted in the 78th minute, with Giuliano Simeone scoring a late equalizer.

Lookman has since opened his scoring for the current season in a 3-1 victory over Sevilla. Scoring in the 26th minute, the winger marked a successful return to his preferred left-wing position after being utilized as a makeshift centre-forward. Following the match, Lookman expressed satisfaction with his development under manager Diego Simeone, noting that he is “gaining significant knowledge” within the squad.

More recently, Lookman’s role has been a point of discussion following the Madrid derby. Despite Atlético Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid, Lookman was introduced only as a substitute in the 67th minute. While he had limited influence on the scoreline, manager Diego Simeone defended the forward, highlighting his unique tactical profile and his ability to be decisive in one-on-one situations near the edge of the box. Simeone acknowledged that while Lookman’s start to the season has been difficult, he remains a vital part of the team’s plans.
