ADF insurgent activity in Ituri province
Overview
In mid-October 2026, attacks attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) resulted in at least ten deaths in the Mambasa territory of Ituri. The violence targeted several mining sites in the Bakaheku grouping, including Makimbilio, Biasiko, and Makamanda. Local monitoring group APDEF Mambasa noted that the insecurity, alongside an ongoing Ebola epidemic and the imposition of illegal taxes by armed groups, has hindered humanitarian efforts and healthcare access.
By early November 2026, joint military operations conducted by the Congolese army (FARDC) and the Ugandan military in the Malembi forest led to the release of approximately fifty individuals held by ADF rebels. While civil society sources reported nearly fifty people escaped or were freed, an official ceremony in Mambasa-centre formally presented twenty-nine former hostages to their families. The captives had reportedly been held for two to three months after being abducted from localities such as Nduye and Malembi.
