Advancements in AI-driven cancer blood tests

Overview

Recent developments in oncology highlight advancements in liquid biopsy technology for early cancer detection using artificial intelligence and machine learning. An international research team led by City of Hope developed the PANXEON blood test, which utilizes AI to analyze microRNA and the protein CA19-9. In clinical testing, this method correctly identified 87% of pancreatic cancers at stages 1 and 2, while maintaining a low false-positive rate. Channing Der, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, noted that the results are “very impressive and promising,” stating that the test far exceeds the limitations of the current gold standard, the CA19-9 blood marker. Concurrently, the PATHFINDER 2 study demonstrated the efficacy of the Galleri blood test. This test analyzes circulating DNA fragments to detect over 50 cancer types, including pancreatic, ovarian, and liver cancers. The study, involving 32,007 participants, found that nearly half of new detections occurred in stages one or two, and nearly three-quarters occurred in stages one through three. The test achieved a specificity of 99.64% and a positive predictive value of 60.3%, while correctly predicting the likely location of the cancer in 91.3% of cases. New research suggests these tests may identify cancer years before clinical diagnosis. A study involving the Pathlight blood test at Lund University found that circulating tumor DNA could identify metastatic breast cancer a median of 13.8 months before it was clinically visible, with some signals appearing nearly four years in advance. Additionally, a longitudinal study published in Cell Genomics involving researchers from the University of Toronto, the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and the University of Oxford found that epigenetic alterations and cell-free DNA signatures could appear in blood plasma up to eight years before diagnosis.
