Advancements in quantum cryptography and secure networks
Overview
Developments in quantum cryptography have progressed through both theoretical breakthroughs and practical military applications. Researchers at the University of Waterloo and collaborating institutions successfully extended the distance of Discrete-Modulated Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution (DM CV-QKD) to over 70km, supported by new security proofs against coherent attacks.
In practical demonstrations, Babcock International Group and Arqit Quantum Inc showcased a secure communications network capable of protecting operational data across 4G/5G, Wi-Fi, and satellite links. Following these advancements, India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in partnership with Taqbit Labs, successfully tested a Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) platform on a live network in Odisha. This system is designed to secure real-time telemetry and critical observations during artillery and armoured weapon testing, utilizing quantum mechanics to detect eavesdropping attempts immediately.
