Advances in quantum computing and AI model compression

Overview

Developments in quantum computing and AI model efficiency have emerged through research and commercial application. IBM and the University of Chicago researchers successfully performed a complex calculation using 70 logical qubits, a task designed to be beyond the reach of classical computers while utilizing error detection methods to ensure reliability.

Concurrently, the Spanish company Multiverse Computing has focused on reducing the operational costs of artificial intelligence. The company, valued at over 1.5 billion euros, launched Quasar 438B, a reasoning AI model it describes as ‘the most intelligent AI model in Europe’. According to the Intelligence Index by Artificial Analysis, Quasar 438B scored 43 points, surpassing the 35 points achieved by Mistral Medium 3.5.

Technical documentation suggests Quasar 438B is based on GLM-5.2, an open-source model developed by the Chinese laboratory Zhipu AI. While Multiverse Computing has not publicly detailed its relationship with the Chinese model, data indicates Quasar 438B may be a compressed version of GLM-5.2 created via the company’s CompactifAI platform. This compression reduces the parameter count from 753 billion to 438 billion, increasing speed from 68 tokens per second to approximately 183 tokens per second. While the compression results in a performance drop from the original model’s 53 points to 43 points, it aims to provide European organizations with high-performance, low-latency options.
