Aeon logistics automation initiatives in Japan
Overview
Aeon has introduced several advanced technological systems to automate its logistics and distribution operations in Japan to combat labor shortages.
In October 2026, Aeon Next launched an automated Customer Fulfillment Center in Hachioji, Tokyo, for its Green Beans online supermarket service. This facility utilizes the ‘AutoFreezer’ system for automated frozen food storage, autonomous mobile robots for refrigerated goods, and robotic arms for picking. The company also announced plans for an ‘AI Concierge’ service to assist customers with meal planning and ordering.
Concurrently, Aeon collaborated with Mujin to implement physical AI at a logistics hub in Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture. This facility, the Aeon Kawaguchi Higashi XD, uses sensors to allow robots to autonomously recognize product weight and contents. The site currently operates over 90 robots, including automated guided vehicles, and has achieved a 50 percent automation rate. Aeon aims to reach 80 percent automation across its logistics bases by 2030.
