The Confederation of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, continues to advance its institutional, legislative, and cultural integration. The AES Parliament has established specialized commissions for Defense and Security, Diplomacy, and Development to serve as an “effective institutional tool for addressing regional political and geopolitical issues.” Economic sovereignty remains a central pillar, with the bloc emphasizing the local transformation of gold, lithium, uranium, iron, and petroleum. While expressing concerns regarding alleged European support for subversive activities, the ministers maintained that the confederation remains open to cooperation based on mutual respect for sovereignty. This shift included notifying the official withdrawal of their states from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, citing concerns over the “politicization of international justice.” Furthermore, following their formal withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in early 2025, the AES is engaging in new negotiations to establish a framework for regional relations. These discussions aim to address the movement of people, goods, and services, as well as trade barriers and investment attractiveness. ECOWAS President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has emphasized the importance of maintaining ties with AES members to preserve regional integration gains.
