Major aerospace and defense exhibitions are being held across Africa to showcase technological innovation and facilitate international military collaboration. In Egypt, the second Alamein International Airshow and Space Exhibition (IAS 2026) featured approximately 250 exhibitors from 50 countries, focusing on national defense achievements and technology localization. Concurrently, the 13th edition of the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) Expo concluded at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Tshwane, South Africa. Marking its 25th anniversary, the event served as “Africa’s Gateway to Defence and Aerospace Collaboration.” While the expo maintained a major international presence with delegations from over 50 countries, there was a noted decrease in foreign aircraft participation compared to previous years, specifically regarding military presence from the United States and Brazil. Notable international hardware included an Angolan Air Force C-295 transport aircraft and a Chinese-designed K-8 jet trainer from the Zimbabwe Air Force. Public displays also featured the JAS 39 Gripen and C-130 Hercules. South African state enterprise Denel showcased various assets, including the Rooivalk attack helicopter, missiles, uncrewed aerial vehicles, and the Badger infantry fighting vehicle. Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Angie Motshekga emphasized a roadmap for localization and sovereign capability to ensure South Africa can design, manufacture, and sustain its own defense technologies. Following the general exhibition, the Brazilian defense industry, coordinated by the Brazilian Association of Defense and Security Material Industries (ABIMDE) and supported by ApexBrasil, concluded its participation at the AAD event. The Brazilian pavilion hosted delegations from Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Lesotho, and Botswana, showcasing ammunition, aeronautical maintenance, and unmanned systems. ABIMDE officials noted the event helped strengthen “South-South cooperation” and increase visibility for Brazilian technical capabilities. However, the sector faces significant economic and strategic headwinds. The Department of Defence’s 2026/27 budget reflects a real-terms cut of approximately 5% when adjusted for inflation, with current defense spending falling to roughly 0.7% of GDP—the lowest share since 1960.
