African and South American forest management reforms

Overview

Efforts to reform forest management and environmental policy have emerged across several regions. In West and Central Africa, stakeholders in Burkina Faso and Chad are advocating for new regulatory frameworks. In Burkina Faso, groups are pushing for the formalization of Assisted Natural Regeneration (RNA), an agroforestry technique noted for increasing soil fertility and agricultural yields. In Chad, the Ministry of Environment is working with parliamentary networks to translate environmental commitments into laws to combat desertification and illegal logging.

In South America, regional authorities and legislative bodies are pursuing similar structural changes. In Peru, officials in the Huánuco region are calling for the transfer of Amazonian forest management from national ministries to regional governments to address deforestation and illegal logging caused by overlapping jurisdictions. Concurrently, Bolivia’s Chamber of Deputies has approved legislative projects to regulate the carbon credit market and establish a framework for climate and biodiversity financing, aiming to secure international investment for conservation.
