African climate finance and policy initiatives
Overview
Efforts to advance climate finance and institutional readiness in Africa have moved from regional technical workshops to high-level diplomatic calls for enhanced partnerships.
Initial regional workshops in Nairobi and Pretoria, supported by the African Development Fund’s Climate Action Window, focused on strengthening project readiness for climate adaptation and mitigation. These sessions aimed to enable hundreds of millions of dollars in climate finance across Southern and East Africa through technical assistance and green finance capacity building. Concurrently, finance ministers in Botswana worked to integrate climate considerations, such as carbon markets and natural capital accounting, into national fiscal systems.
Following these technical efforts, African leaders and officials at a United Nations General Assembly roundtable called for increased cooperation between governments, the private sector, and philanthropies. Officials highlighted the necessity of using blended finance, green bonds, and capital markets to combat climate shocks like droughts and floods. In West and Central Africa, discussions organized by the Green Climate Fund emphasized the need for stronger institutions to transform climate priorities into ‘bankable, investment-ready projects’ in sectors such as clean energy and climate-smart agriculture.
