Overview
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has advanced infrastructure planning and funding in North Africa. Initially, the bank completed a feasibility study for a 2,350 km trans-Maghreb railway corridor intended to connect Casablanca, Algiers, and Tunis. The project, estimated at $4 billion, focuses on rehabilitating existing infrastructure and building new links, such as a 130 km line between Annaba and Jendouba, though implementation faces political hurdles and border closures.
Subsequently, the AfDB committed 405 million euros to Morocco to support specific development goals. This includes 205 million euros dedicated to railway infrastructure, specifically targeting the Kenitra-Marrakech corridor to enhance connectivity between urban and economic hubs. The remaining 200 million euros was allocated to the ‘Cap Compétences 2030’ program to modernize vocational training and provide apprenticeship opportunities for 260,000 youths.
