African diaspora cultural festivals in Maryland

Overview

During Labor Day weekend, several cultural festivals celebrating the African diaspora were held in Maryland.

Afro Plus Fest, which expanded to a three-day event at the Northwest Stadium Complex in Landover, drew an estimated 120,000 attendees. The festival featured a diverse musical lineup including Afrobeats, soca, and R&B, alongside over 100 brand activations and 125 food vendors. Maryland Governor Wes Moore presented founder Michael Awosanya with a governor’s citation, highlighting the event’s role in establishing the state as an entertainment and economic destination.

In Frederick, the second annual AfroFlavour festival also took place, focusing on food, music, fashion, and entrepreneurship. Organizer Yewande A. Oladeinde stated the event aimed to provide a broad experience of African life to establish the festival as a recurring regional fixture.
