African giant snail health risks in Paraguay
Overview
Health experts in Paraguay have issued warnings following a massive population increase of the African giant snail in Capiibary, San Pedro, attributed to recent heavy rains.
While veterinarian Griselda Meza of the University of Asuncion clarified that the snail is not poisonous, she noted it can transmit dangerous diseases, including parasites that cause meningitis. Although laboratory samples have not yet detected specific meningitis-causing parasites, the Ministry of Health is alerting medical professionals to monitor for parasitic meningitis in patients.
The species is recognized as a significant sanitary problem across the Caribbean and parts of South America. To manage the risk, experts recommend wearing gloves, using sea salt for handling, and burying snails with lime and plastic to prevent scavengers from spreading pathogens. The Ministry of Health also advises washing food with potable water and avoiding direct contact with snail mucus.
