African Union mediation in South Sudan

Overview

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, acting as Chairperson of the African Union High-Level Ad Hoc Committee on South Sudan (C5), has been leading regional diplomatic efforts to stabilize South Sudan ahead of its scheduled December 2026 elections.

In late September 2026, Ramaphosa convened a virtual meeting with C5 members—South Africa, Algeria, Chad, Nigeria, and Rwanda—and members of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). The session focused on assessing the political landscape and reviewing progress made since previous summits and ministerial visits to Juba.

Ramaphosa emphasized that the 2018 Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) remains the “paramount legal instrument” for the country. Regional leaders have urged all parties to comply with this peace agreement, end hostilities, and establish a consensual electoral roadmap. The committee also called for the release of political detainees and the provision of adequate funding for transitional institutions to ensure a credible political transition.
