Agios Vasileios wildfire damage response

Overview

A large wildfire swept the municipality of Agios Vasileios in southern Rethymno, Crete, from 29 July to 1 August 2026, destroying homes, businesses, farms and municipal infrastructure. In the days that followed, regional authorities coordinated with the mayor, the president of the Pan‑Hellenic Federation of Geotechnical Public Employees and the deputy regional governor to launch on‑site inspections and document losses.

On 3 August 2026 the Regional Unit of Rethymno opened a formal application process for state aid under Law 4797/2021, covering material losses to equipment, inventory, vehicles and agricultural holdings. Applicants were required to submit detailed damage descriptions, photographic or video evidence and quantitative loss data, with an electronic deadline of 1 October 2026.

The following day, 4 August 2026, officials reiterated the need for swift, comprehensive documentation to accelerate technical support and recovery. Damage‑assessment teams continued field inspections, emphasizing cooperation among all services to ensure prompt aid for affected residents, producers and businesses.
