Agrarian land reform protests in Tocantins

In August 2026, agrarian movements in Tocantins, Brazil, engaged in multiple protests regarding land reform and settlement rights.

Initially, more than 100 people from approximately 15 peasant communities, organized by the MST and the Articulação Camponesa de Luta pela Terra e Defesa dos Territórios do Tocantins, blockaded the North-South Railway near the Palmeirante terminal. The group sought to disrupt freight circulation to pressure the Federal Government to finalize the purchase of Fazenda Recreio/Freitas by INCRA for the Gabriel Filho Settlement Project. Organizers noted that while the acquisition was authorized, it had stalled due to a federal decree blocking budget releases.

Later in the month, more than 50 families organized by the MST protested at the Federal Public Ministry headquarters in Palmas. This mobilization focused on preventing the cancellation of the Taboca settlement project in Monte do Carmo and demanding the fulfillment of an official Incra notice regarding selection processes. Protesters also reported ongoing agrarian conflicts, including intimidation and the intentional burning of community crops during a severe drought.
