Agricultural and climate challenges in Huila, Colombia

In the Huila department of Colombia, efforts to stabilize the agricultural sector have moved from long-term infrastructure planning to immediate climate crisis management.

Initially, the Colombian Ministry of Agriculture and the Huila Governor's Office launched a feasibility study to establish a domestic fertilizer production plant. This mixed-economy project aims to reduce farmer reliance on expensive imported inputs, with potential expansion from Huila to other major agricultural regions like Valle del Cauca and the Coffee Axis.

However, the region is currently facing severe agricultural and urban challenges driven by the El Niño phenomenon and rising temperatures. Extreme heat, reaching up to 39 °C, has caused water scarcity and impacted cholupa production, with Asohofrucol president Arturo Pascuas Yañez noting that heat is causing pollen to crystallize and leading to flower abortion. In response to these environmental pressures, authorities and academic institutions are developing heat action protocols to address urban vulnerabilities in Neiva and integrate climate data into risk management plans.
