Agricultural and water insecurity in Peru

Overview

Prolonged drought and climate instability are severely impacting agricultural production and water security across various regions of Peru. In the Huánuco department, specifically the Huamalíes province, a water deficit and high temperatures have destroyed staple crops and native potato plantations, creating an imminent risk to the food security of subsistence farmers. Local authorities have expressed frustration over a lack of coordination regarding field evaluations.

Broader climate phenomena, including El Niño and La Niña, are disrupting traditional agricultural calendars in the Amazon and Andean regions. In San Martín, production of coffee, cacao, and plantains is under threat. Meanwhile, in San Antonio de Putina, water scarcity is affecting multiple communities. In response, local agencies are implementing preventive measures, such as training producers to grow drought-resistant species and providing veterinary support for livestock. Experts have highlighted the urgent need for improved irrigation systems, water reservoirs, and watershed protection to prevent economic and social collapse.
