Agricultural and weather disruptions in Jammu and Kashmir
Overview
Agricultural production in Jammu and Kashmir has been severely impacted by a combination of extreme weather and disease. In the Baramulla and Bandipora regions, farmers reported significant losses to paddy crops due to a suspected outbreak of rice blast disease, a fungal infection, which was exacerbated by recent hailstorms. Some growers estimated production losses as high as 65 per cent.
Following these events, unexpected heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding in the Bohri and Anand Nagar areas of Jammu, causing water to enter homes and disrupt local infrastructure. While no casualties were reported from the flooding, the Bandipora district continued to face crop damage from sudden hailstorms and gusty winds. The India Meteorological Department has maintained weather alerts for several districts, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Anantnag, and Rajouri, warning of continued thunderstorms and wind.
