Agricultural credit and trade in Colombia and Dominican Rep

Overview

Agricultural sectors in Colombia and the Dominican Republic are addressing various financing and trade challenges. In Colombia, leadership changes at Finagro under Édgar Chalhoub Succar aim to accelerate financial inclusion and long-term development credit for agricultural chains. This focus on credit is furthered by a partnership between the Colombian Ministry of Agriculture and Grupo Éxito, which seeks to facilitate direct sales from small and medium-sized producers to large retailers. This initiative includes the Agro-commercial Integration Credit Line to provide farmers with advances for future harvests.

In the Dominican Republic, agricultural organizations such as Confenagro and Fenarroz are advocating for improved credit access and lower interest rates. Producers have specifically requested the restoration of FIDE loans and the reopening of rice exports to Haiti to counter competition from U.S. imports under the DR-CAFTA agreement. Additionally, there are calls to regularize Haitian labor to address planting and harvesting shortages.
