Agricultural development in Thessaly Region

Overview

The Thessaly Region is implementing various initiatives to support local agricultural infrastructure and producers.

In mid-August, Regional Governor Dimitris Kouretas announced €400,000 in funding for an agricultural road construction project in Livadi, Elassona. This decision followed the Ministry of Rural Development’s failure to approve the road program. The project aims to improve access to livestock farms and agricultural properties. Additionally, the Governor proposed a four-year development program to modernize livestock facilities and ensure water sufficiency.

By late August, regional efforts expanded to address market challenges for legume producers. Following meetings with several agricultural cooperatives, the Region began exploring the establishment of local markets across Thessaly. This initiative seeks to help producers of chickpeas, lentils, beans, and broad beans bypass low-priced industrial buyers and unfair competition from imports by facilitating direct contact between producers and consumers.
