Agricultural policy and climate challenges in the region
Overview
In Republika Srpska, the government has allocated 3.95 million KM to subsidize the purchase of Belarus tractors for 84 agricultural holdings. This initiative, part of the ‘Village of Republika Srpska – My Place for Life’ project, provides a 60 percent reimbursement to beneficiaries, including young producers and large families. Prime Minister Savo Minić noted that over 2,400 tractors have been supported in the last seven years, and a 31 million KM investment in irrigation systems is planned.
Concurrently, extreme drought conditions in Serbia have led to calls for changes to agricultural support. Marijan Rističević, President of the Committee for Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, has proposed suspending the requirement for farmers to justify subsidies through invoices. While livestock associations have criticized the lack of immediate relief, officials stated that assistance depends on formal damage assessments by municipal secretariats. There has also been tension regarding the Ministry’s claim that EU regulations might prevent direct aid.
