Agricultural production and economic challenges in Çivril

Overview

The agricultural season in the Çivril district of Denizli began with the hand-picking and sale of cornel cherries, locally known as ‘ergen’. Producers sold the fruit to traders from various regions, including Uşak, Kütahya, Eskişehir, and Ankara, with prices varying based on ripeness and variety.

However, local leaders later reported significant economic challenges facing the sector. Despite increased production volumes for crops such as cherries, peaches, apples, and grapes, stagnant domestic demand and export levels have caused prices to drop. Mayor Semih Dere noted that cherry producers are struggling to cover harvesting and labor costs, prompting some to uproot trees. Amid these economic pressures, the region also hosted the 28th International Çivril Apple, Agriculture, and Culture Festival to promote local agricultural values.
