The investigation into the alleged misappropriation of subsidies for the Agrofert holding has been consolidated under the jurisdiction of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO). The Czech Supreme State Prosecutor’s Office ruled that the case must be handled as a single unit by the EPPO to avoid contradicting EU Council regulations, as the European and national subsidies share a common factual basis. The probe follows a criminal complaint regarding a potential conflict of interest involving former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. The European Commission has officially confirmed a potential conflict of interest, determining that the RSVP Trust established by Babiš to hold his Agrofert shares does not sufficiently mitigate concerns regarding the management of EU cohesion and agricultural funds. Consequently, the Commission has suspended the reimbursement of certain EU subsidies for companies within the Agrofert group. The State Agricultural Intervention Fund (SZIF) reported that this suspension affects approximately 3.18 million EUR (76.9 million CZK) from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and cohesion funds, though direct agricultural payments continue as they are deemed low risk. Prime Minister Babiš has dismissed the Commission’s stance, maintaining that he no longer owns Agrofert and that placing assets in a trust was sufficient. He has stated that he is not interested in the matter and does not intend to resolve it. Meanwhile, political opposition in the Czech Republic has criticized the situation, arguing that the Prime Minister’s actions could jeopardize future EU funding for the country. country and suggesting he misled the public and the President regarding his divestment.
