Indonesia is advancing its digital sovereignty through strategic initiatives in artificial intelligence and higher education IT infrastructure. The Ministry of Communication and Digital is finalizing a National AI Roadmap, which identifies ten priority sectors and establishes ethical guidelines. To support these advancements, the government is exploring massive computing infrastructure with a capacity of up to 1,000 Megawatts. To address the projected national shortage of digital talents by 2030, various stakeholders are launching specialized training programs. Telkomsel recently concluded its tenth IndonesiaNEXT Summit in Jakarta, themed ‘AI Driven Digital Talents’. Following an initial pool of 8,916 students in April 2026, the program progressed through onboarding, international certification, and a digital hackathon, culminating in the selection of 24 top talents. On September 17–18, 2026, Universitas Indonesia held a hackathon where 146 students across 30 teams developed prototypes and minimum viable products for ~~corporate partners. Additionally,~~ industry partners, including PT IDSurvey, PT Sucofindo, PT Paragon Technology and Innovation, BNI Ventures, and PT Aplikanusa Lintasarta. In the field of robotics, AiMOGA ~~Robotics~~ Robotics, a company under the Chery Group, has ~~begun collaborating~~ initiated collaborations with Indonesian universities to advance ‘embodied intelligence’. During the Indonesia-China Education-Industry Collaboration Summit 2026, the company demonstrated its four-legged robot, Argos, which can respond to voice commands. This initiative is supported by Vice Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Stella Christie, as a driver for economic growth. Regarding governance, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria emphasized that AI adoption in public services should be measured by improved service quality and local adaptation. Experts, including communication and digital culture specialist Firman Kurniawan, suggest that regulation should prioritize digital talent development to transform Indonesia from a ‘mere consumer market into a producer and innovator of AI products’. This focus on human capital is viewed as essential to meeting the projected demand for 12 million digital talents by 2030 and bridging the capability gap between advanced users and the general public. However, legal experts suggest current frameworks may still be insufficient.
