AI integration in journalism and creative industries

Overview

The integration of artificial intelligence into journalism and creative industries has prompted discussions regarding professional utility and the value of human labor.

In the Western Balkans, media professionals have identified AI as a potential tool for automating technical tasks, such as analyzing large datasets and scheduling court hearings, to mitigate journalist burnout. This technological shift occurs alongside regional efforts to protect editorial independence from ownership interference.

On a broader scale, the use of AI in media has expanded to include AI-generated news anchors, such as Entravision’s ‘LIA’, which is designed to deliver real-time data and weather. While companies maintain that such tools are intended to supplement rather than replace human staff, the technology has faced criticism from those who view it as a threat to human journalists. Additionally, in the creative arts, studies suggest that while AI-generated artwork can match human skill levels, public perception of its value remains lower when the technology is disclosed.
