Al-Azhar diplomatic and religious engagements

Overview

Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed el-Tayeb, has engaged in a series of diplomatic discussions focused on religious cooperation, Islamic studies, and international issues.

In mid-August, the Grand Imam met with the ambassadors of Saudi Arabia and Australia. Discussions with the Saudi representative centered on strengthening ties between Al-Azhar and Saudi religious and scientific institutions. During talks with the Australian ambassador, the Grand Imam addressed the rise of Islamophobia and the need for an accurate representation of Islam, while also discussing the Palestinian cause.

Following these meetings, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held a telephone conversation with the Grand Imam. The two leaders discussed the expansion of Islamic studies and the continuity of missionary efforts (dakwah) to benefit the global community. The conversation also focused on fostering moderate and authoritative Islamic ideas and strengthening the relationship between Malaysia and Al-Azhar.
