Alabama defeats Kentucky 45-17 in SEC opener

The No. 12 Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 45-17 at Kroger Field to open Southeastern Conference (SEC) play, improving their record to 2-0.

Despite the victory, Alabama faced significant offensive struggles during the first half. Sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell dealt with an intentional grounding penalty, a fumble, and two interceptions, including a pick-six returned by Kentucky’s Mi’Quise Humphrey-Grace. Kentucky maintained a 17-13 halftime lead, supported by a touchdown pass from Kenny Minchey to Henry Boyer.

Alabama secured the road win in the second half as the defense took control and the offense found its rhythm. The Crimson Tide dominated the latter half of the game, outscoring Kentucky 32-0. The resurgence was fueled by a strong ground game led by Daniel Hill, who rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown. Other second-half touchdowns were scored by EJ Crowell and Trae'shawn Brown, while Russell added a passing touchdown to Rico Scott in the fourth quarter. Defensive standout Luke Metz also contributed a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Kentucky, led by first-year head coach Will Stein, saw its offense struggle significantly in the second half, managing only 62 total yards. The Wildcats' performance was hampered by four turnovers. Alabama’s defense played a key role in the comeback, highlighted by a strip sack by Devan Thompkins that set up a scoring drive. The result extends Alabama’s historical dominance in the series; Kentucky’s last victory against the Crimson Tide remains 1997.
