While Russell showed dual-threat potential, coaches potential through the use of run-pass option (RPO) plays, he noted areas for improvement regarding his decision-making and physical protection. the importance of learning to protect himself from unnecessary hits while running. The Crimson Tide offense relied heavily on the ground game, totaling 227 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Freshman running back EJ Crowell, who was a game-time decision due to an ankle injury, scored his first career touchdown. Other rushing scores were provided by Daniel Hill and Trae'Shawn Brown. While the offense experienced a slow start, the Alabama defense dominated, holding East Carolina to just two total rushing yards and an average of 0.1 yards per carry. Senior linebacker Yhonzae Pierre recorded a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown and also recorded a sack. Following the win, head coach Kalen DeBoer noted that while the team performed well, there are “areas to clean up in the film room.” The team now prepares for its first SEC matchup against Kentucky.
