The judge-only trial of former broadcaster and ex-Wallabies coach Alan Jones, 85, continues at Sydney’s Downing Centre courts. Jones has pleaded not guilty to 22 charges—20 counts of indecent assault and two of sexual touching—alleged to have occurred between 2003 and 2023 against six men. Testimony has included accounts from a complainant, “C”, who alleged Jones touched him inappropriately in a car, an elevator, and a Moskan restaurant. Journalist and author Peter FitzSimons testified as a prosecution witness regarding a 2019 conversation with Complainant “C”. FitzSimons stated the staffer was “completely emotionally traumatised” and “revolted” by the alleged behavior, which included Jones allegedly pushing the man against a wall and grabbing his groin in a lift. A witness testified that a former radio staffer had previously confided that Jones was ‘in love with him’ and had engaged in regular flirting. A friend of complainant “C” also testified that the man had previously claimed Jones was ‘in love with him’. Radio broadcaster Ray Hadley testified regarding the impact of the alleged misconduct, recalling a staffer tearfully confiding that they felt “helpless and fearful for his career.” Hadley admitted to sending text messages to complainant “C” in October 2019 stating that Jones ‘needs to be destroyed’, and vowed to ‘tear his supporters apart’ following the 2023 publication of allegations in The Sydney Morning Herald. Regarding a lunch attended approximately 20 years ago, former 2GB presenter Jason Morrison testified that he did not observe anything untoward, despite guests making sarcastic jokes that Jones and “C” looked like “a great couple”. Recent proceedings also addressed a threatening email sent to Morrison, which NSW Police have confirmed they are investigating. In a significant development, a prominent athlete, referred to as Complainant “M”, testified in person for the first time. The athlete testified that Jones allegedly kissed him on the mouth at a sporting event in 2015, an incident he stated he “can’t get it out of my memory.” The witness further alleged that Jones subjected him to unwanted physical contact at Jones’ Circular Quay apartment, where Jones allegedly pressed his genitalia against the athlete's thigh. The athlete also described a pattern of behavior involving Jones using flattering language, such as calling him “beautiful man” and “special,” and sending weekly flowers for several years. During cross-examination, the complainant was questioned regarding discrepancies between his police statements and court testimony, though he maintained the incidents occurred. Jones denies all allegations.
