Albania EU accession process
Overview
Albania’s pursuit of European Union membership has been marked by domestic political disputes and international diplomatic engagement.
In early August, the Albanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade denied allegations from the Liberal Democratic Movement (LSDM) regarding secret negotiations for EU accession. The ministry rejected claims of a hidden deal, stating that the government maintains transparent communication with EU member states and is not making concessions on national identity, language, or history.
By late August, the focus shifted to bilateral cooperation at the European Forum Alpbach. Albanian Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha met with Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger to discuss the path toward integration. Hoxha noted Austria’s support through the ‘Friends of the Western Balkans’ group and emphasized that Albania aims to be “useful” to the Union by contributing to European security and aligning with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.
