Albanian corruption investigation into Igli Tare

Overview

Albania’s Special Prosecution Against Corruption (SPAK) has launched an investigation into Igli Tare, the former sporting director of AC Milan, for alleged money laundering and corruption. Prosecutors claim Tare collaborated with former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku to conceal undeclared assets by registering two villas in the coastal areas of Dhërmi and Palasë under his name. These properties have been seized by authorities.

In response to the investigation, Agron Tare defended his brother, stating that Igli Tare’s income is fully justified by his professional football career in Europe, where he reportedly earned approximately 1 million euros annually. Agron Tare noted that the two had known each other since high school and suggested the investigation might be influenced by political conflicts.

While the investigation proceeds, observers have noted that while SPAK has seen success in targeting international organized crime, there remains high public expectation for the agency to address high-level domestic corruption.
