Albanian healthcare capacity and management

Overview

In early October, medical teams at Albania’s Memorial Hospital successfully performed a rare Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) on a patient with acute type B aortic dissection. The procedure involved a team of 10 doctors from the ‘Shefqet Ndroqi’ hospital and the ‘Nënë Tereza’ University Hospital Center.

By late October, the focus shifted toward systemic preparedness. Following recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), Albanian health officials began working to strengthen emergency response plans. Edmond Zaimi, Head of Polyvalent Emergency at the University Hospital Center of Tirana (QSUT), indicated a need to double current emergency medical capacities to manage potential surges in demand caused by disasters, war, earthquakes, climate change, or terrorist acts. Efforts are currently focused on testing existing plans to identify and address gaps.
