Albanian political opposition and government tensions

Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party, has intensified his criticism of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Albanian government, alleging widespread corruption and mismanagement of crime. Berisha specifically cited the government’s response to wildfires and questioned the effectiveness of law enforcement following violent incidents in Sarandë and Elbasan. He also accused the Interior Minister of misleading the public regarding the arrest of Ylli Zalla.

As the political situation evolves, Berisha faces a shifting landscape involving emerging radical left movements. While these new factions represent a departure from traditional right-wing politics, they have established a complex interdependence with Berisha’s existing structures. These movements, which reportedly possess international backing, are expected to influence future parliamentary elections and Albania’s path toward European Union integration.

Internal instability has further complicated the opposition's position. Fatbardh Kadilli, a former high-ranking official and leadership candidate, has warned of a crisis within the Democratic Party. Kadilli argues that the influence of ‘Berishism’ is driving the party’s decline and criticized leadership for a lack of political reflection. He characterized recent attempts at party ‘renewal’ as a false process fueled by loyalty struggles rather than genuine change, noting that the party remains disconnected from citizens and insulated from external criticism.
